A C2C crochet name blanket works best when the lettering is planned as a separate block grid before the blanket is started. C2C gives every diagonal block a clear place in that grid, but it does not make the letters automatically the right size. Begin with the name, a target panel width and a small gauge sample.
Make the name readable at blanket distance
Put one letter in each square of graph paper or a digital chart. Leave at least one blank block between letters and a blank row above and below them. Narrow letters such as I and L need extra surrounding space; wide letters such as M and W may need a slightly wider grid. Count the blocks across the entire word, including spaces, before choosing the blanket width.
Turn gauge into a panel measurement
Work a small C2C swatch in the yarn and hook you intend to use. Measure several completed blocks rather than one block. If your blocks measure 1.4 cm wide and the chart is 31 blocks wide, the letter panel is about 43.4 cm before a border. This is a planning estimate: wash, blocking and yarn choice can change the finished fabric.
Choose a background and letter colour
Strong contrast matters more than a long list of colours. Test the two yarns together in daylight. A cream letter against pale yellow may disappear even when the shades look different in a shop. Keep a written key beside the chart so that one symbol always represents the same colour.
Count diagonal blocks, not rows of stitches
In C2C, the visual chart is read as blocks. Mark each completed block on the chart, then check the growing rectangle against the name every few diagonals. If the word is centred, the blank blocks on the left and right should balance before you begin the border.
Before you make the full blanket
- Make a three-letter sample with the exact yarn and hook.
- Check that the letter edges are not pulling the background out of shape.
- Count the full chart width including blank blocks.
- Plan where colour changes will happen before carrying yarn across a long empty area.
